RUTH MAY HERMAN – 85 of Blueberry Bay, Queens Co; and Williamsville, NY. It is with a deep sense of loss that the family of Ruth May Herman announces her passing, at age 85, on Sunday, October 2, 2011, in Williamsville, NY. Born in Buffalo, New York, Ruth lived a full and interesting life, the centre of which was her love of family and belief in God. Curious and with a zest for life, she enjoyed a variety of jobs and interests from school bus driver, camp counselor, many years of Sunday school teaching to doing missionary work, in Northern Canada. In later life, while visiting her daughter Deborah, by then a resident of beautiful Nova Scotia, Canada, Ruth and her husband, Gilbert converted an old school house into a summer home, in Blueberry Bay, Queens County, just up the road from one of her all time favourite places, Ragged Harbour and so began the annual trek to the seaside, where she made many friends, attended the Liverpool Baptist Church and pursued her interest in astronomy. Over the years, one of Ruth’s passions was to catch a glimpse of the illusive ‘Green Flash’ and there in the bay, where the sky meets the ocean, in a most perfect way, she managed to witness this breathtaking phenomenon, on several occasions. These encounters with nature and in turn with God enriched her soul and deepened an already steadfast belief. Mother of six and foster Mom to many, Ruth leaves behind daughters Deborah Herman-Spartinelli (Sebastian), Miriam Neal (Jonathan), Rebecca Sweet (Tim), Joy Dietrich (Richard), sons, Melvin Herman (Sandy), Gilbert Herman Jr. (Donna), Timothy Herman (Debbie), 14 grand-children and 12 great-grandchildren, as well as her sister, Rose Addeo and husband, Gilbert Franklin Herman. A memorial service was held for family and friends in Williamsville, on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Liverpool Baptist Church, Liverpool, NS or to Camp Cherith of Western New York, P. O. Box 324, Williamsville, NY, 14231.
