LUGAR (GOODDAY), JOAN - Joan Frances Lugar (87), Bedford, Nova Scotia, died on Sunday morning, October 9th, 2011 at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre. Born in Bear River, Nova Scotia, March 7th, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Lt. Colonel Reginald and Dorothy (Bayard) Goodday. Joan was a graduate of the Netherwood School for Girls in Rothesay, New Brunswick. Upon graduation, she joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps where she served three years as a Sgt. Instructor with the Basic and Advanced Training Centres. Her fourth year of service was with the Canadian Army Show with whom she travelled in Canada and Northwest Europe. In 1946, upon discharge from the army, Joan attended McGill University where she studied physical education. After McGill she attended the Maritime School of Social Work where she graduated in 1950 with a Masters Degree. In 1951 Joan married David Lugar and they raised four children in the family home. Most of her adult life was spent in Bedford, where she offered her skills to many various community activities. She also spent five fun filled years as the Sports Director at the Anglican Youth Camp at Mason’s Point. Joan’s love of singing contributed to many Anglican Church Choirs in Eastern Canada, and her most beloved singing group, “The Bedford Singers”. She was predeceased by her husband David, and her brother Lt. Colonel Bayard R.L Goodday. Surviving are children Chris (Joyce) Aylesford Lake; Linda (Keith) Lugar-Boyle, Brampton; Gwen (Vernon) Rowley, Lethbridge;); Gordon (Shari Lee) Lower Sackville; beloved grandchildren, Geoffrey (Jennifer), Ottawa, Sandy, Halifax, Heidi Joy (Tim) Chapman, Bedford and Amy Grace (Jeremy) Lai, Halifax, Ben and Chris, Lethbridge; sister Betty Mitham, Hampton, New Brunswick; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. Joan will be sadly missed.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 Saturday, October 15th at the Bedford Baptist Church, followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment service will follow the reception at the Anglican Cemetery on Perth Street, Bedford. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
