Mary Catherine Urquhart, 94, Port Hawkesbury, formerly of West Bay Inverness County, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family in the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Born in Gillis Cove, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Christine (MacLean) Gillis and wife of the late Donald Urquhart of West Bay.
For over 60 years, Donald and Catherine were the proud owners of the Bras d’Or Lake Mink Ranch in West Bay.
She was a graduate of Normal Teachers College in Truro.
She was also a member and treasurer of the West Bay United Church UCW for over 50 years. In addition to her profound love for her family, Catherine loved to be around people. Her trademark smile and her hardy laugh let everyone know that she was in the room.
On the farm many a meal was served to anyone who happened to arrive at meal time and her apple pies were considered second to none. Her many interests included card games, dart leagues and playing harmonica with the West Bay Entertainers. She was envied by many for her skill and knowledge of her many gadgets and especially her computer and the Internet. Everyone was kept well informed of what was going on in her life by way of emails and pictures from her digital camera. She was the only resident in the nursing home with her own laptop.
We, the family, at this time would like to give many thanks to the wonderful staff of the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home for the wonderful care they showed towards our mother over the last few months.
She is survived by daughter, Lorraine (John) Walker, Marion Bridge; sons, David (Cathy), Ancaster, Ont., Glen (Anna) New Glasgow.
Predeceased by son, Neil, sisters, Josephine Green, Caroline Patterson, brothers, Lauchie and Leitch.
She was especially proud of her grandchildren, Lena, Heather, Les, Amber, Donald John, Breanne, Rachel, Maya and Gavin. Great-grandchildren, Madison, Brett, Lydia, Rowan, Kale, Callie, Keira, Madeleine, Malcolm, Cameron and Alyssia.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2 from West Bay United Church with Rev. David MacLean officiating. Burial will be in West Bay Cemetery.
