We, the family of John Martin MacKeigan, regret to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Martin passed away peacefully at his home on Nov. 7, 2011.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Albert and Margaret (MacKinnon) MacKeigan.
He worked for many years at the Co-op Bakery in Sydney Mines until its closure in 1976. He then began work at the Northside General Hospital in the maintenance department and later as night watchman, until his retirement in 1997.
Martin is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jessie (Costello) MacKeigan. He was blessed with a wonderful son, Martin Jr. and daughter-in-law, Kate (MacLeod) MacKeigan and two very special grandsons, Jonathan and Kyle, all in Lantz, N.S. Martin also leaves to mourn his sister, Florence Landolphi, Boston, U.S.A.; his sisters-in-law, Mary MacKeigan, Lillian (Jack) Proctor, Patsy Melnik, Kay MacNeil and Betty (Norman) Pye; and his brother-in-law, Gerald (Paulene) Costello and many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and -nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Albert MacKeigan, his sisters, Rodena (Sid) Moore, Theresa (Daniel) Holic, his brothers-in-law, Quinny Landolphi, Jim Sullivan, Bernard MacNeil and Paul ‘Junior’ Melnik, his sister-in-law, Eileen Sullivan and his mother and father-in-law Lillian and Hugh Costello.
Visitation Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Fr. J.J. MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Martin’s memory may be made to the Lung Association or Palliative Care.
