Mary, age 80, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2011, at the Swift Current Care Center. Mary was born to Bernard and Helena Kehler on June 27, 1931, in Schoenfeld, Saskatchwan. Mary was predeceased by her grandparents, parents, two infant sisters, brothers Jake and Frank Kehler, sister Justina Wernicke, and brothers-in-law Fred Wernicke, Isaac Ginter, and Bill Neustaeter. Mary is survived by sisters Tiena Kehler, Anne Neustaeter, Hilda Ginter, and sister-in-law Hilda Kehler, and many nieces and nephews. Mary grew up at the family home in Schoenfeld. In 1965, she, along with her brother Frank, sister Tiena, and their mother, moved to Swift Current. Shortly thereafter, Frank went to live with his sister Hilda, leaving Mary and Tiena to live with their mother until her passing in 1988. It was shortly after this that Mary began attending work at the Swift Current Ability Center. In 1992, Mary moved to Chortitz to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Bill Neustaeter. During her stay there, she rode the school bus to and from the Ability Center. She made many new friends, and enjoyed her time working in the activity center. On October 12, 2005, Mary moved to the Swift Current Care Center, where she once again made many new friends, with both the residents and with the staff. She always welcomed her visitors with a big smile, often with arms outstretched for a hug. She loved to play the “clapping game” with anyone up for the challenge. Facing her partner Mary would begin by saying,”Don’t miss.” The game would start out slowly, and pick up speed, until someone broke the pattern, at which time Mary would laugh loudly and say, ”You missed”, regardless of who was at fault. She also enjoyed puzzling, helping other residents with their meals, and singing along to familiar songs. The staff kept her pretty by doing her hair and nails regularly, which she was always very proud of. It was the early part of 2011 when Mary’s health began to deteriorate. Her last week was spent sick in bed until God released her from her earthly body and took her home. Her loving smile and happy laugh will be greatly missed.
