Isabel died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, in the early-morning hours of Nov. 27, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
The daughter of the late Thomas and Jessie (Lusk) Mew, Prime Brook, Isabel was born June 3, 1938.
Isabel’s childhood years were spent in Gabarus and Sydney. She graduated from the Sydney City Hospital School of Nursing in May 1960. She obtained her certificate for the Canadian Institute of Management from the University College of Cape Breton in June 1990. She practised nursing until she retired in 1997. Isabel’s many friends and family will remember her for her big heart, feisty humour, and the love of her family.
She is survived by the love of her life, her husband, Gerd Bruckschwaiger; her daughters, Dawna Horton (Jim Lettice), Heather Wilson, Ramona Bruckschwaiger; and her sons, Peter Ferguson (Laurie Reid), Darren (Cindy) Bruckschwaiger, Pernell Bruckschwaiger (Neilena Cooke). She leaves behind her grandchildren, Joshua, Stephen and Matthew Horton, Jessica Wilson, Kyle Bruckschwaiger and Jesse Campbell. She is survived by her sisters, Joan (Billy) Mills and Mary Lou Blundon (Paul Dakai); brother-in-law, Heniz (Barbara) Bruckschwaiger (Austria); and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. She is also survived by her loyal dog, Rocky.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and support staff of the ICU and 3A for their kindness, compassion and expert care.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, Nov. 29 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Interment to follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the memory of Isabel to the Canadian Lung Association and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
