It is with sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. George McPherson, age 92, formerly of King Edward Street, Glace Bay, passed away on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home, Glace Bay, where he had been a resident the past four years.
Born in Reserve Mines he was the son of the late Wilfred Dan and Beatrice (Ling) McPherson.
George was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. He was employed as a miner with Dosco, then Devco for 43 years retiring from the machine shop.
George served as an anti-aircraft gunner during the Second World War in the United Kingdom and Europe. He was awarded the Star-France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, War Medal (1939-45), Belgium Medal (1939-45). George was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, swimming and working on cars. He also was an avid bingo player. George had a great sense of humour that family, friends and staff at Taigh Na Mara grew to appreciate and look forward to.
He cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to spend time with them. He will be missed by all.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 63 years, Veronica (O’Handley); daughters, Marie, N.W.T., Shirley (Gary) Hiscock, Glace Bay; sons, Larry (Lynn), Howie Centre, Reggie (Carolynn), Ontario, Bobby, Dartmouth; brothers, Cecil, Halifax, Alfie (Gertie), Kentville; 12 cherished grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Wilfred, Russell, Billy, Giles, Michael, Thomas; sisters, Maude and Kittie.
In honouring George’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, 2-4 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with a funeral service to follow in the funeral home chapel with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s memory may be made to Taigh Na Mara, Veterans Comfort Fund.
