CATES - Doris Emerelda (Pederson) Cates It is with deep sadness the family of Doris Cates announces her sudden passing on December 12, 2011 at Outlook Hospital. Doris was born on August 10, 1931 at the family farm northeast of Kyle to Elmer and Ruth (Matthews) Pederson. She was the fifth child out of eight, the eldest of the daughters. With four older brothers and three younger sisters Doris helped with the family farm both inside and outside. She took her schooling at Clearwater and Kyle schools, achieving her Grade Twelve. She worked for many local families and also for the White Bear Rural Telephone Exchange. She helped haul mail to Tuberose and Sanctuary. Doris also spent many years sewing for people. In 1953 Doris married Keith Cates and together they raised a family of three, Dale, Wayne and Karen. Doris had many interests. She learned to sew at an early age, and wore out more than one sewing machine. She loved crocheting afghans, knitting sweaters, making doll clothes, crafts, tracing family genealogy, oil painting, drawing, quilting, reading and gardening. She was always babysitting for someone, helping her mom, sisters, aunt and whoever else needed help. Doris kept in touch with numerous relatives, and friends from both her family and Keith's. Doris enjoyed the visits with her family and friends as well as the family get-togethers with her children, grandchildren and of course the great-grandchildren. Doris had a strong faith and attended Clearwater Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Ruth Circle bible study group. She enjoyed her church family immensely. She was very proud of the church as her family had been an integral part of the church's early years in the Kyle community. Doris was a historian and she had the family history of the Pederson, Matthews, Cates and Symington histories. She helped with the new Kyle History book and was a valuable member of the committee as she could remember a lot of details, etc that needed to be told. Doris leaves to cherish her memory, sons Dale (Kathy) and their family Jenn (Cory) Stevenson, Amber (Wade) Petersen & Tyler (Ambrely Faye) Cates; and Wayne (Fay) and their family Amanda (Chris) Roslinsky, Natasha Deitz,Kaylea Hughes, Dena Hughes, Jade Hughes, Kara Cates & Tristen Cates; daughter Karen (Clarke) Baxter and their children Keithen Baxter and Kristina Baxter; great grandchildren Kaydance Deitz, Matthew Hughes, Jack Petersen & Birk Petersen; step-daughter Roberta (Robert) Schafer and their family Shandra (Dave) Jamieson, Brent (Lani) Schafer & Terry (Julie) Schafer and their families; brother Eldon Pederson; sister Iva (Bob) Speir; sisters-brothers-in-laws Marlene Pederson, Lyle (Mary) Cates, Enid Henderson, William Byrd, Albert Will; and by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
