MacLean, Alfred James – 93 The family of Alfred (Al) MacLean is deeply saddened to announce his death on Saturday, December 24, 2011 at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Halifax. Born at Orwell Cove, Prince Edward Island, Al was a son of the late Wilfred and Katie (Mutlow) MacLean. His formative years were spent on the family farm but at the tender age of sixteen, Al entered the Royal Bank of Canada where he had a long and successful career interrupted only by six years service in the Royal Canadian Army during the Second World War. Following the War, Al met his wife and life companion Catherine (Christianson) who predeceased him in early October of this year after sixty-five years of marriage. Together they enjoyed the many challenges and rewards provided by Al’s banking career and over the years lived in a numerous cities of Eastern Canada until retiring from his last branch management position at Dartmouth Main Branch early in 1974. Thereafter, Al spent his retirement years living at various times in Dartmouth, Hunts Point and Upper Blandford. Al never stopped making friends throughout his long and productive life and maintained a strong sense of commitment to family and community and enjoyed greatly the loving support of his extended family. Al was a devoted father and grandfather and beloved “Uncle Al” to his many nieces, nephews and in-laws. Until he was no longer able, owing to declining health, Al took great pleasure in cottage and country living, gardening, golf and in volunteering his services to numerous local charities. Al is survived by sons Barrie (Karen), Truro, Bradford (Sue), Mississauga, granddaughters Cally and Kelsey and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides wife Catherine, Al was predeceased by brothers Reginald (Sybil), Charlottetown and Edison (Lucille), Orwell Cove, PEI. Special thanks go to the staff of Garrison West, Veterans Memorial Hospital for the terrific care and comfort provided to Al these last few months. Visitation to be held 6- 8 pm on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home, Portland St., Dartmouth. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
