It is with deep sadness, that we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. John Archie passed away Wednesday morning, Dec. 28, 2011, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital with his loving family at his side.
Born in Mabou, N.S., he was the son of the late James and Catherine (McPhee) Gillis and was a faithful member of the former St. Agnes Church, and more recently the parish of St. Leonard, both in New Waterford.
As a young man he worked in No. 12, 16 and18 collieries. John Archie will mainly be remembered as a family man who truly enjoyed spending time with his wife and family. He also enjoyed taking long drives in his car, playing card games, watching Saturday night hockey and listening to fiddle music, especially during his trips to the Broad Cove concerts. He was a very gentle and easygoing man who loved being around people and truly enjoyed hearing a good joke. John Archie was a long time member of the New Waterford Pensioners Club.
He will be sadly missed by his loving children, daughters, Rebecca (Francis) Fiore, New Waterford, Shauna (Steph) Gillis, New Victoria; sons, Daniel, Raymond, both of New Waterford, Robert, Brampton, Ont.; grandchildren, John-James, Katlyn, Barbara, Kimberly, Aaron, Laurissa, Taylor, Lloyd, Nicole, Robin; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Dave, Brandon, Sara, Michael, Jordan, Taylor, Brooklyn, Jailyn; daughter-in-law, Debbie Gillis and son-in-law, Moe Duguid.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his loving wife of 48 years, Marguerite ‘Dolly’ (nee Brady), sons, Edwin, John Boyd, Lloyd, daughter Barbara, and brother Angus.
Visitation will be held on Sunday evening, Jan. 1, 2012, from 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Victor Ozoufuanya is Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Leonard’s Church. Cremation will follow with interment in St. Agnes Cemetery at a later date. Following the funeral mass a reception will be held in St. Leonard’s Hall, Convent Street.
