It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the passing of John ‘Buddy’ Farrell of Whitney Pier on Jan. 2, 2012 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born on May 8, 1940, John was the son of the late Thomas and Mary (MacDonald) Farrell. John was a loving brother to his siblings and was cherished as the “Baby Boy” in his family of 13 children.
John was a pipefitter by trade and was a member of the U.A. local 682 Sydney. His work took him all over Canada. John loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his best friend, Donnie MacIsaac. He enjoyed going to flea markets and estate sales. John became an avid coin and stamp collector for his homes were filled with antiques, vintage pictures and furniture.
John is survived by his two daughters, Marie Elaina and Carolee; a proud and caring grandfather to his five grandchildren, Richard, Brittney, Dyllan and Harrison, to whom he was not only a devoted Papa, but a surrogate DAD, and Ainsley. He is also survived by sisters, Theresa Kehoe, Dolores (Gerald Putt), Alice Corbett, Patsy Kiley and Donna (Frank) Dziubek; sisters-in-law, Francis Farrell and Bertha Farrell; godchildren, Catherine Maureen Vigneau, Ottawa, Michael Kiley, Sydney, Chris, Sheldon and Colin Fraser, all from Sydney and Nicole Pottie, Port Hawkesbury and also numerous nieces and nephews.
In 1999, John was profoundly saddened by the death of his only son, Shaun. John was also predeceased by his sisters, Margaret, Dorothy, Mary, Kathleen; brothers, Pat, Tom and Raymond.
Visitation and funeral service to honour the late John ‘Buddy’ Farrell will be held in the Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10 to 12 noon with memorial service to follow at 12 noon with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Light refreshments will be shared following the service. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
Donations in memory of John may be made to charity of choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
