Christine Barnes

BARNES, CHRISTINE - The death of Christine T. Barnes of Amherst occurred Saturday, January 7, 2011 at East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, NS. Born on the family farm in Conell, Florenceville, New Brunswick, on September 3, 1918, she was one of six children of the late Howard C. Taylor and Georgia Pearl (Strange) Taylor. Christine was an adherent of Trinity St. Stephen’s United Church, and recently served on the Board of Trustees. She was a sixty-year member of the Lord Amherst chapter IODE. Other memberships include Girl Guides of Canada Trefoil Guild, Powertalk Cumberland Club ITC, and Town and Country Investments Club. Living on the farm fostered a love of the outdoors, including gardening, cross-country skiing, swimming, walking, and picking mushrooms, fiddleheads, and berries. Christine also enjoyed socializing with her many friends and playing bridge. Sewing was another lifelong interest, as well as rug-braiding. In later years she traveled abroad, and visited her children on numerous occasions. She is survived by her children Jeannie (Brian) Rouleau, L’Original, ON; Linda (Clare) Van Norman, Neversink, NY; Judith Barnes (Eric Mattila) Aurora, ON; Howard Barnes (Elaine Retter), Kitchener, ON; seven grandchildren: Gregory and Jacqueline Rouleau, May Van Norman, Raymond and Stuart Mattila, and Caroline and Lucy Barnes; sister Muriel Jacobson, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Christine was predeceased by sister Vivian Floyd, and brothers Harry, Clarence and Wilbur Taylor.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2011 at 2 p.m. from Trinity-St. Stephens United Church, Amherst, with Rev. Catherine Gaw officiating. Interment will take place in the spring in the Amherst Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations in Christine’s memory may be made to the L.A.
