Robert ‘Robbie’ Steele, age 46, died on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of Vivian Day and the Late Ronald Steele. Robbie was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, where at one time he served as an altar boy.
Rob in his younger years had a zest for life, active in hockey, boxing, running and weight lifting. Rob prided himself in his accomplishments and proudly displayed his collection of trophies. Growing up on Church Street, Rob developed a great circle of friends who till his death shared his friendship.
As a young man, Rob became employed as a salesman and worked in sales all of his working years. Leaving Cape Breton for some time, residing in Ontario and British Columbia. But as we all know, the road in life can be a difficult one. During this time, Rob and his family relocated back to Cape Breton to their roots.
Robbie is survived by his precious children, Cheyenne and Matthew Steele; the mother of his children, Kathy Haggett; brother, Shawn (Karen Hawkins) and special nephew, Jack, Sydney Mines; sisters, Janice, North Sydney, Cheryl (Brian) MacDonald, Sydney Mines, and Laurie (Danny) Holic, Little Bras d’Or.
Rob came from a large family, surrounded by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. His uncle Eddie was special to Rob, taking him to hockey games, out for coffee or just to talk. Also to mention is Billy who was always a phone call away and provided many hearty meals. Both were always willing to help Rob at any time.
Besides his father, he was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Colin and Annie Mae Steele and maternal grandparents, Frank and Hilda Day.
Visitation for Robbie Steele will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012 from 7-9 p.m. at the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A celebration of his life will take place Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. J.J. MacDonald officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northside Hospital Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
