Valerie Maxine Bigelow - 82, of Habitant, Kings County, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, with her family by her side. Born on May 8, 1929 in Medford, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred and LuluBelle (Green) Taylor. She worked at Scotian Gold, packing apples and seasonal vegetables for many years and enjoyed the great times she had there with her friends. Valerie was a great housekeeper, loved to clean and have everything in its place. She was a great cook, especially chocolate birthday cakes for all of her grandchildren and she always had plenty for everyone who came to visit. She made quilt blocks and her sisters all helped to put them together and make beautiful quilts. She knitted, sewed, crocheted and could do just about anything to make beautiful items. She was a member of the Habitant Women’s Institute and the Royal Canadian Legion, Habitant Branch No. 73, Canning. She is survived by a daughter, Doris (John) Davidson; four grandchildren, Troy (Karen), Rhonda (Jeff), Treena (Andy) and Tyler (Paula); six great grandchildren, Cameron, Carter, Rayna, Kayla, Kelsey and Rhye; five sisters, Greta (the late Ivan) Swindells, New Minas; Alice (the late Gordon) Fraser, Canning; Joyce (Junior) Lyons, Look Off; Marilyn Taylor, Medford; Edna (Hugh) Taylor, Minden, Ontario; a brother, Archie (the late Shirley), Medford; brother-in-law, Bill Milbury, Newburn, Lunenburg County; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Burrill Forshay “Sam” Bigelow; three sisters, Annie (Sonny) Winchester, Wilda (Bruce) Spicer and Margaret Milbury. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 12, 2012 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Burial will take place at a later date in the Habitant Cemetery. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses, the Palliative Care team, Reverend Mary Anne Doherty-Fleet, Chaplain and Reverend Sterling Gosman for their care, kindness and compassion. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses.
