OLDFORD – Henrietta Elizabeth (Betty) Wooldridge
An amazing woman, aged 91 years 9 months, passed peacefully away at James Peyton Memorial Hospital, Gander on January 14, 2012 surrounded by her loving family.
Betty (Hettie) was born April 7, 1920, the only child of Thomas and Harriett Wooldridge of Fogo, NL.
A brilliant, mathematically–minded person, she excelled at school and attended Memorial College in St. John’s. Her teaching career took her to many communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, including Battle Harbour, Grenfell Mission School at St. Anthony, and finally Burnside, Bonavista Bay where she met and married the love of her life, Frederick W. Oldford who pre-deceased her in April 2010.
Her whole life she contributed unstintingly to her family, the family business, her community and church.
A genuine giver, who never boasted or complained, she was genuinely thankful for everything and her greatest fear was that she would cause anyone trouble. There was always room at her table for one more person and no one ever left her home hungry.
After the family business closed she became Post Mistress in Burnside and acted as Justice of the Peace until her death.
Leaving saddened by her passing but ever grateful for the gifts of love, guidance, and patience and understanding acceptance are her daughters Donna (Jim Rockwood) and Shirley (Phil Pomeroy). Her three grandsons – who owe a lot to Nan for value gently instilled while they spent every available movement with Nan and Pop in Burnside during their formative years, are: Christopher (Stacy) of Quispamsis, NB; Ian (Laura) of Quispamsis, NB; and David (Laura) of Head of Jeddore, NS. Her great grandchildren, Jacob, Maggie, Sam and Jack who were her pride and joy. She also left behind a large
circle of extended family and friends.
She is resting at St. Albans Anglican Church, Burnside with visitation on Sunday 7-9 pm and Monday 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral will be at 2 pm Tuesday from St. Albans. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Albans Church Tower Restoration Fund, Burnside will be gratefully accepted.
