It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Harvey Hammond Worth, 73, of Noonan’s Shore, PEI, which occurred Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at the Palliative Care Unit of Prince County Hospital, Summerside. Born in Charlottetown, to the late Athol Worth and Alma (nee Jardine) Warren, he was lovingly raised in Albany, PEI, by his mother and stepfather, the late George Warren. Harvey had a big heart and was known as a very generous, caring and clever person. He was ahead of his time in so many respects, including the value he placed on education, which he liked to remind his family was “an easy load to carry around.” A self-taught businessman, he spent 15 years operating M & W Heating in Ottawa, ON, a company he founded and grew. Throughout his life, Harvey was a true ambassador for his native P.E.I. In 1980 he moved his family back to the Island he loved so dearly. There, he was a lifetime member of, and long-serving volunteer at, the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club. His self-built home at Noonan’s Shore was his pride and joy, where, from his front window, he spent many hours “monitoring” the construction of the Confederation Bridge. Harvey’s grandchildren looked forward to frequent trips to P.E.I. and, each year, they assisted him in planting his bountiful garden. Their beloved Poppa taught them many things including how to fly a kite, wash a car, cut the grass, feed the birds and, most importantly, to appreciate the beauty of his beloved Island. They all enjoyed many hours on “Poppa’s beach.” Harvey loved to regale his family of his many travels and experiences during his service in the Royal Canadian Navy and was a proud and active member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He enjoyed his last 21 winters in North Fort Myers, Florida, where his days were filled with golfing, fishing, and many odd-jobs in service to his Upriver Campground friends and neighbors. He was known for his long evening walks around the park, during which his treats were anxiously awaited by his many dog friends. As his pancreatic cancer progressed, Harvey was comforted by the love and care of his family and friends, as well as by hundreds of cards, letters and good wishes from his Ottawa and Upriver Campground families. Throughout his illness, his strong faith lessened the burden. Harvey will forever remain in the many hearts and lives he touched. He was the devoted husband of 46 years to Norma (nee Larocque) Worth, beloved father of Deanna (Blair) Landry, Halifax, NS; Darlene Worth (Alex Harris), Dartmouth, NS; much loved Poppa of Olivia, Jessica, and Ethan Landry; Josh, Kris, and Lily Harris. Dear brother of Joan Hunter and Barbara Tracey. Loving brother-in-law of Janet Larocque, Ottawa, ON; Ron (Ewa) Larocque, Orleans, ON; Barry (Nika) Larocque, Kars, ON and a cherished uncle. Resting at the Moase Funeral Home, Summerside, with visiting hours on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Funeral service at Cape Traverse United Church, Monday at 11 a.m. Interment later in the Wilmot Valley Cemetery. Memorial donations would be greatly appreciated to the Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society, 100% of which will be devoted to pancreatic cancer research. Having been recognized for his more than 75 donations to the Canadian Blood Services, and more than 10 gallons of blood to the Central Florida Blood Bank, the family would be honored if you chose to donate blood in Harvey’s memory.
