ALFRED BASSENDOWSKI

Passed on: January 22nd, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alfred (Al) Edward Bassendowski on January 22, 2012 after a courageous two year battle with cancer. Al was born on November 7, 1937 in the Shamrock, Saskatchewan area where he also attended school. Al came to Moose Jaw in 1957 working various jobs and meeting his wife Bernice of 50 years. After working for a few different trucking companies, he settled into Sears working there for 14 years. In 1978 Al started his own bike repair and saw sharpening business, Al's Handyman Service. Part of the charm of the business was the frequent visits and long stories with his loyal customers and friends over the years. He worked in bike repair business until his passing. Al loved working with his hands making many of his own bike repair tools and remodeling his saw sharpening machines. In the off season, Al renovated his house many times with the help of his friend Alvin. He also helped renovate his daughter's house. He liked to travel and camp with family and friends; especially the yearly trips to Alberta to pick up the "Happy Gang" (grandchildren). His greatest treasures were his Grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Edward (1984), Anne (1987) and daughter Michele in 1971. He is survived by wife Bernice, son Derwin and his five children Sabrina (Cris), Julie, Colleen (Mickey), Kristina and Darcy (Kasandra); daughters Shannon (Pete) Korbo and their two children Garrett and Bret-Michele (Corey); Sheila (Mark) Gardner and their two children Darren and Morgan; five great-grandchildren; Sophia, Jaylyn, Allie, Owen and Ava; brothers and sisters, Gerald (Vi), Mel (Louise), Lyn and Eunice; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters in-law. The family wishes to thank Dr. Zarkovic and nurses at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre for their kind and compassionate care. We would also like to thank the home care staff, Dr. G VanHeerden, nurses from the ER and first floor of the Moose Jaw Union Hospital. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 1:30 pm. Della Ferguson will officiate. Prayers and viewing will be held at the Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 8 - 9pm for family and friends. Cremation will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Allan Blair Cancer Center 4101 Dewdney Ave., Regina, S4T 1A5, or to the Canadian Cancer Society Colorectal Research, 61B Ross St.W., Moose Jaw, S6H 2M2. In living memory of Al, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).
