It is with great sadness that the family of Stanley Joseph Wadden announce his passing on Jan. 23, 2012 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, Sept. 21, 1920, he was the eldest child of the late James and Jane (Harris) Wadden.
Stan was a well known and highly respected mechanic throughout all of Cape Breton Island. From a very early age he had a love of cars and all things mechanical and was driving long before he was old enough to have a licence. He transferred these skills into a career in the army during the Second World War, serving overseas as a mechanic where part of his assignment was working on the Sherman Tanks.
Upon returning home he began working at Cape Breton Battery for many years before becoming the owner/operator of Stan Wadden’s Auto Electric. Stan’s skills were greatly recognized and he prided himself in giving his customers excellent service. Shortly after retiring, Stan suffered a setback when he had a stroke at the age of 61. He stoically worked at recovering and valued keeping himself fit and active, allowing him to enjoy a long and fulfilling life. He was able to pursue his love of golf and was a member of Lingan Golf Club for many years where he was granted a lifetime membership. He also developed his skills as a photographer, taking pictures throughout the community for various events. A great pleasure for him was skating at the local rinks for many years.
Stan and his wife Polly were long time parishioners of Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, where he was involved in numerous activities, including acting as an altar server until the age of 87. He was also a member of The Royal Canadian Legion - Whitney Pier Branch 128. A great deal of his time as well was spent at his bungalow in Red Islands with his family. Stan also had a great interest in the Wadden family genealogy.
Stan treasured his family and was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by the love of his life, Polly (Neville), to whom he has been married for 68 years; son, Stan and his wife Patricia, Dartmouth; daughter-in law, Anne Marie, Moncton, N.B.; grandchildren, Matthew (Joy Lagare) Bedford; Lori (Daniel Smith) Dartmouth; Lisa (Jordan Herman) Dartmouth; Scott (Marie Reinsborough-Wadden) Sackville, N.B.; Jeff, Toronto; John (April Demmons) Boundary Creek, N.B; David, Dalhousie University; and precious great-grandchildren, Jackson Smith; Claire and Callum Reinsborough-Wadden.
