H Raymond Scovil
SCOVIL, H. RAYMOND - H. Raymond Scovil passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Raymond was born in Queenstown, NB, the son of the late Walter and Gladys (Mayes) Scovil. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Jonsson) Scovil, his four daughters Mary Waterous of San Roque, Jean Watson (Ronald) of Wainright, Joan Florean (Luigi) of Daysland and Catherine Scovil (Denis Landreville) of Ottawa and grandchilden Leah Bowie (Adam), Justin Florean, Max Waterous, Christopher Watson, Elizabeth Waterous, Adrianne Watson and Madeleine Landreville. He is also survived by his two brothers, Walter and James, and three sisters Georgianna, Pauline and Margaret. In addition to his parents, Raymond was predeceased by his sister Kate MaGee (John). Raymond grew up on a farm in Queenstown, NB and agriculture became a central theme and focus throughout his life. He attended McGill University and later Cornell University studying agriculture and agricultural economics. His career with the NB Department of Agriculture spanned 39 years and for 10 of those years he served as Deputy Minister. He later headed Scovil Associates as President for over a decade. Over the years, he remained a keen supporter and promoter of agriculture. Raymond complimented his work life with active community involvement serving as President of numerous associations including: the Agricultural Institute of Canada (and Fellow), the Agricultural Institute of Canada Research Foundation, the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame, the NB Cancer Society, the McGill Society of New Brunswick, the Fredericton Golden Club, and St. Anne’s Lodge (senior housing apartment). Raymond was an active member of Christ Church (Parish) Church, serving as Vestryman, Warden, and President of the Men’s Club. He was also a long time member of the Fredericton Rotary Club and the Fredericton Curling Club. Raymond took the time to be engaged with those around him and held a genuine interest in others. A great storyteller, sharing his renditions of past experiences, travels and observations. As an enthusiastic reader, he was always up to date on current affairs and the latest biographies. Raymond was an avid curler, skater, swimmer, golfer and gardener. In addition, he enjoyed a good dance (particularly his own special "jig") when the opportunity arose. A very positive and optimistic man, he was also patient and tolerant. He was a loving and kind father, and in turn, was very proud of his four daughters and their families. Raymond will be deeply missed.
Visitation will take place at McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York Street on Sunday, January 29, 2012 from 4 to 7 pm. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church (Parish) Church on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 2:00 pm. The Rev. Anthony Kwaw will officiate, assisted by The Rev. Joyce Perry. Interment will take place at a later date in the Forest Hill Cemetery.
