Fillmore, Gerald Elmer — (CD) MWO (Ret’d), age 90, of Brooklyn, Hants County, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2012, in the Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth, Hants County. Born on June 26, 1921, in Brooklyn, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Josephine (Harvey) Fillmore. Gerald attended the Brooklyn District School and the Windsor Academy, later taking a business course in Truro. He served in the Canadian Forces (Army) from 1943 to 68, retiring in the rank of Master Warrant Officer. His service was at several bases in Canada, USA and Korea. Upon his retirement from the service he settled back in Brooklyn, Hants Co., where he became very community involved. Gerald served on the original committee for the construction of the Newport District Rink. Later in 1968, he was accepted in the federal public service as a staff member in helping to set up the Canada Manpower Centre in Windsor. In 1973, he accepted the position of Assistant Administrator and Director of Licensing with the Nova Scotia Liquor License Board in Dartmouth until 1983. Gerald was a member of Hants County Branch No. 9, Royal Canadian Legion, Windsor. He served as a member on the following Nova Scotia Boards: Hants Regional Housing Authority, Social Assistance Appeal Boards for Hants/Kings, and the West Hants Municipal School Board. He always enjoyed living in the country. After retirement he became interested in politics and was a member of the Liberal Party since his retirement. He always enjoyed good old country and old time fiddle music. Gerald always liked to do some gardening, especially flower gardens. He and his wife, June, did considerable travelling in Canada and the USA, when he was in the service and later after that. They kept in touch with many friends they met in their travels. Gerald is survived by his sons, Brian (Kathryn), British Columbia and their children, Ryan and Michelle; Glenn (Audrey), Cole Harbour; sister-in-law, Violet Fillmore, Windsor; niece, Beth (Doug) Allan, Dartmouth. He was predeceased by his wife, the former June Matson; daughter, Nancy Fillmore; brother, Donald Fillmore. There was no visitation by request. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Friday January 20h, 2012, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel, 194 King Street, Windsor. Rev. Debra Mosher officiated, followed by a reception in the Lindsay Family Reception Centre, 184 King Street. Interment was in the Riverview Haven Cemetery, Union Corner, Hants County.
