Ray was born in New Waterford, N.S., the son of Michael A. and Helen (Despres) Flemming. In 1960, he moved to Calgary, where he married, reared his children and died suddenly on Feb. 1, 2012. Strathmore became home, after retirement from the Alberta Correctional Service, Calgary Remand Centre.
Ray is survived by his wife, a hometown girl, the former Elizabeth McMullin and his cherished daughters, Lynn (Michael) Amann and Jennifer (Alcide) Flamand; he was the much beloved Papa of Monika Amann and Lyle and Tyler Flamand. He will be missed by his two older brothers, Michael (Jean) of Sydney, George (Norma) of Saskatoon and sister-in-law, Margie of Truro.
Ray was predeceased by sisters, Carmel Kosman, Leila Given Hart, Barbara Flemming and Marcia Coleman; brothers, Charles and Ian ‘Nip’.
Ray loved to sing, especially with the “sing-son” group in Calgary, around the campfire in Invermere and at the “happy hours” in Yuma, Arizona. The Columbia Valley and surrounding mountains were his spiritual home but the warmth of the American southwest desert called to him, even on his final day. His resounding “All Right!” was heard often throughout the years, mostly in response to someone else’s singing but also at concerts and even at graduation and wedding ceremonies. Like most golfers, Ray could hit some brilliant shots and miss many others. Family and dear friends remember with fondness the Christmas Eve and Stampede Breakfast celebrations at the Flemming home. Ray excelled at his job as the chief swamper in the kitchen every December 23 and 24. We’ll miss you at our family hugs, Dad.
A memorial mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at Sacred Heart Church, 1307-14th St. SW, Calgary, with interment in the adjoining Sacred Heart Columbarium.
In lieu of flowers in his memory, Ray would encourage you to share a special candlelight dinner with those you love.
