He is remembered lovingly by his four children - Carolyn Smith of Winnipeg, MB; Larry Balion (Helen Savisky) of Saskatoon, SK; Cynthia Balion (Parminder Raina) of Hamilton, ON; and Charlene Balion (Dale Gareau) of Regina, SK; and by his grandchildren, Wayne (friend Holly), Audra (David Schultz); step-grandchildren, Stephanie Boucher (Brett Balon), and Michael Boucher. Joe is also survived by his younger brothers, Paul (Mary) Balion of Edmonton, AB, Edward Balion of Bradwell, SK; his sister-in-law, Rose Balion, and by his children’s mother, Sadie Balion. He is predeceased by his parents, Petro (Peter) and Nettie (Chytyk); his sister, Anne (Alex) Hryniuk; his half-brother, George and his sister-in-law, Joan Balion; and by his special friend, Margaret Lopinski. Joe was a carpenter by trade building homes in Prince Albert, schools in rural Saskatchewan, and his cabin at the farm at Wakaw. He was a lifetime member of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Prince Albert and served on the parish council. Upon Joe’s retirement, he was well known on coffee row at the Prince Albert Co-op where his fun loving nature, sense of humour, and warm smile was known by all. Joe was a very energetic and fit individual who spent much time walking. Joe pursued his hobby and love of woodworking and his projects were viewed by many at the Prince Albert Exhibition in which he won many ribbons. Joe operated the family farm throughout his working years and continued his active involvement on the farm with his son until he moved to Saskatoon in 2007 when Alzheimer’s disease began limiting his activities. Joe was a very compassionate and caring individual who loved helping his children. At his passing, he resided at the Luther Special Care Home and the family would like to extend their most heartfelt thanks to the compassionate caregivers of the Temperance/Munroe Neighborhood. Prayer Service will be at 7pm on Friday, February 10, 2012 in Saskatoon at the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 919-20th St. W.
