We, the family, announce the passing of our beloved mother, Pearl, in the An Cala palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in New Waterford, on March 20, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Colin and Margaret (MacPherson) Graham.
With the death of her mother at an early age, she helped raise her sisters and brothers. In her youth she was involved in basketball, softball and badminton and was an avid fan of exercise and yoga.
For many years she was a leader in the Girl Guide movement and devoted time to community services.
She was a devout member of Mount Carmel, now the Parish Church of St. Leonard, a lifetime member of the Jr. St. Anne’s Society and a member of the CWL.
Pearl and Jiggy spent summers camping at Ingonish and both loved to be surrounded by children and grandchildren.
Pearl is survived by daughter, Joyce (Gordon MacAulay Sr.), Las Vegas; and son, Gary (Betty), New Waterford. Nanny Pearl to Shauna Lashbrook, Karen and Nancy MacAulay, U.S.A., Kim Baxter, New Waterford, and Keri Butler, Halifax; 12 great-grandchildren, C.J., Ashley, Jack, Brandon, David, Daniel, Colleen, Annie, Shaun, U.S.A., Kolton, Brook and Brett, N.S.; sisters, Veronica ‘Ronnie’ Brinkley, Jackson, Mississippi, Rita (Emo) Pacenti, Raleigh, North Carolina; many nieces and nephews.
Pearl was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Jiggy and grandson, Gordon MacAulay Jr., sisters, Mary Catherine Mercier and Eunice Passerini, brothers, Frank, John, Martin and Pius.
There will be no visitation. A funeral mass of celebration will be held Thursday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard with Fr. Victor Ozoufuanya officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Knights of Columbus hall, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Hospice/Paliiative Care Society of Cape Breton.
