It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Joseph Young of Lingan, on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Lingan, March 21, 1940, he was the son of the late Matthew and Catherine (MacDonald) Young. Joe was a longtime member of St. Joseph’s Church, Lingan, and a lifelong resident of Lingan Road.
He was a dedicated ‘coal miner’ for over 35 years and most of his days mining were spent at the Lingan Mine, where he was a respected member of their Mine Rescue Dragger Team.
There were many challenges over the years and with Ma’s faith and sense of humour they were met. She always kept Da on his toes. Joe was a member of the New Waterford Pensioners Club, where he enjoyed playing 45s, he also enjoyed fishing, and wherever there was a ‘bingo’ game, he would find it.
He is survived by three sons, Steven (Carolyn), Fort McMurray, Alta., Devin (Jo ann), Lingan, N.S., Walter (Tracie), Fall River, N.S.; seven grandchildren, Walter Jr., Siana, Jessica, Jessie, Darrah, William and Lucas. He will also be sadly missed by sisters, Margaret Ann (Greg) Hogan, New Waterford, N.S., and Marie, USA; brother, Greg, Truro, N.S.; several nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by wife and best friend, Iris (MacKinnon) in 2004 after 40 years of marriage, sister, Doreen, brothers, Steven, Raymond and Frank — aka, Smiley.
In honouring Joe’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home in New Waterford. The funeral mass of celebration is Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Avenue with Fr. Victor Ozoufuanya officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery, Lingan, followed by a luncheon at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall, Lingan Road.
As an expression of sympathy for Joe, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery Fund, Lingan, N.S.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
