Gerda Theodora Wittenberg - 93, formerly of Upper Canard, Kings County, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2012 in Shannex - Blomidon Court, Greenwich. Born in Holland, she was the daughter of the late Dirkjan and Aleida (Navis) Kuipery. She immigrated to Canada in 1952, and lived in Ontario until moving to Nova Scotia in 1956. Settling in Upper Canard, she and her husband, Garnet operated a mixed farming operation, including poultry. She had also been a member of the Christian Reformed Church, Kentville and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Cashen, Kentville; a son, Richard (Gail), Upper Canard; three sisters, Jantje, Leida and Marie, all of Holland; one brother, Hank, Ontario; four grandchildren, Melanie, Tara, Ashley and Evan; two great grandchildren, Brandon and Dylan; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Gerrit “Garnet”; three sisters, Hannah, Mina and Dien; three brothers, Jan, Herman and Johan. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, February 16, 2012 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 17, 2012 in the Christian Reformed Church, Kentville, Reverend Bert Vanderbeek officiating. A private family burial preceded the funeral service and was held in the Canard Burial Ground, Upper Canard. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society.
