William Alexander Fitzgerald of Mulgrave, formerly of Dingwall, passed away Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neils Harbour, with family and friends at his side.
Born in Dingwall, he was the son of the late Alex and Jessie Fitzgerald (Penticost).
Billy was employed as a lighthouse keeper at St. Paul Island and Money Point. He was also employed as a maintenance man at both the old and new hospitals in Neils Harbour. He served on the board of directors when the new hospital facility was being constructed.
Billy is survived by the love of his life, Norma (Fricker); one daughter, Donna Ferguson and Dan; granddaughter, Meagan; grandson, Evan; sisters, Dollena (Freeman) MacKinnon, Fall River, N.S., Anne (Louie) Reny, Quebec; brothers, Robert (Marge), Dartmouth, N.S., and Henery (Audrey), Dingwall. Billy was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Francis, Kaye and Mary, brothers, John, Trusdale and James.
Although Billy was a resident of Mulgrave, his favourite spot was MacKinnon Campground in Lake Ainslie where he and Normie and his cat Scamp spent many happy hours with their extended family from spring to fall.
As per Billy’s wish, he returned to Neils Harbour to spend his final days at the place where he worked and the staff who were both loving and caring to every detail. We the family, wish to thank the doctors and all the staff at Buchanan Memorial for their support and care. Also to all of our friends who spent many hours at our side at the hospital. We would also like to thank the staff at both hospitals in Antigonish (Doctor Bernard) and the staff and speech therapy personnel at Strait Richmond Hospital.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
