Passed on: March 7th, 2012

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Simon Dan MacKinnon, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Black Point on July 31, 1939, Simon Dan was the son of the late Archie D. ‘Little Hell’ and Flora MacKinnon.
He will always be remembered for his morning and evening drives, and every year he looked forward to the annual fishing derby. He loved hunting and fishing, especially bear season. He was a quiet man who loved everybody in the community. He was always willing to help others, and always had a smile on his face. He liked adding his own style to his cars, gambling, and going to the local Co-Op to get his Atlantic Lotto tickets. His family will forever hear the sound of his little tune that he'd always greet you with.
He lived in Black Point, moved to Bay St. Lawrence, then to Baddeck where he lived and worked as a woodsman until retirement in Bay St.Lawrence.
He will be sadly missed by his loving family and his special friend, Willy Duncan MacKinnon.
Simon Dan is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 51 years, Atlanta MacKinnon, and his 13 children; Stanley (Anna), Florence Ann (Tony), Archie (Ruby Ann), Lawrence (Shirley), Stewart (Ruth Ann), Marlene (Anthony), Simon (Sharon), Barbara (the late Roland), Jocelyn (Roland), Margie (Keith), Darrell (Danielle), Rachel (Jan), Merle (John); 45 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and his sisters, Mary Louise MacKinnon and Mary (Bucher) MacKinnon.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his grandson, Simon Boyd; brother, William Bonnar; sisters, Christina MacKinnon, Margaret MacKinnon and Jessie MacKinnon; his best friend and bear hunting partner, Little Patty MacKinnon and also Lloyd Matheson, whom he considered a son.
Thank you to Dr. Gillis and the staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, from the MacKinnon family.
Visitation for the late Simon Dan MacKinnon will be held at the home of his daughter, Marlene at 3163 Bay St. Lawrence Rd., on Monday, March 12, 2012, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. The burial will take place at a later date.
