Passed in: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: March 11th, 2012
It is with great sorrow and regret that we, the family, announce the departure of Lynn Carman Barrett MacDonald from this mortal coil. She passed away on a beautiful sunny March afternoon surrounded by her family and close friends.
Born in Sydney River, Lynn was the daughter of the late Russell and Dolores (Martinello) Barrett of Sydney River.
Lynn is survived by her adorning husband and soulmate, John Piercey ‘J.P.’ MacDonald; son, Jonathon (Carla), Sydney; twin daughters, Emily (Stevie Dubbs), Sydney, and Jessica, Sydney River; grandson, Joseph; nieces, Sarah, Barrie, Ont., Jennifer, Halifax, and Jessica, Enfield; nephews, Christopher, Sydney Forks, and Costa, Enfield; grandnieces, Xiao and Lena, Barrie, Ont. Lynn is also survived by sisters, Janice Leonard (Ken Larkin), Barrie, Ont., Nancy (Steve) Collins, Sydney Forks; brothers, Glenn Barrett, Barrie, Ont., and Hal (Trish Murphy), Enfield, N.S.
Lynn graduated from Riverview Rural High School in 1970 and went on to attend St. FX University, graduating in 1973 with a BA degree in English and history. In 1974, she earned a B.Ed degree with honours.
Lynn began her career as an elementary classroom teacher with the Cape Breton County School Board, then with amalgamated Cape Breton District School Board as a speech correctionist. She ended her professional career with the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board as an elementary school resource teacher and then back to her first love, the classroom. Lynn enjoyed her profession, always keeping in mind the best interest of the children she taught.
Lynn was a loving mother, grandmother and sister with a wide open heart, as well as a true friend and inspiration to everyone she met. She was her husband’s sun and stars, resplendent jewel and the light of his life.
Lynn’s insights, quick wit, sense of humour and her true appreciation of the absurd were gifts she freely shared with all. “She was everyone’s Santa Claus.”
She was kind, generous, conscientious and family oriented. Lynn took on the roles of wife, mother and big sister seriously, at times to the chagrin of her husband, children and younger siblings.
Lynn, your presence will be with all of us forever and you will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Thursday, 11 a.m. with Rev. Duane Devereaux officiating. Interment will take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or email sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
