Queenie Stonehouse

STONEHOUSE, Queenie Mae – Passed away March 18, 2012 at the Halifax Infirmary, QE11 at the age of 85 after a brief illness.
Born in River Hebert in 1926, and a long time resident of Amherst, Queenie was the daughter of the late William and Dorothy (Light) Rutherford.
Following High School graduation she worked at Canada Car & Foundry, Pugsley’s Pharmacy and Ormond’s Drug Store. She was a 25-year employee of the Nova Scotia Power Commission, retiring in 1991 as Distribution Clerk Stenographer. She enjoyed her work and rapport with her co-workers and looked forward to annual trips to PEI with “the girls”. Queenie cherished her summers at the cottage with her husband Lloyd and being an extremely proud and lovingly devoted Nana to Julianna, Suzanne, Erin and Peter. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Amherst having served as Deacon and was a member of Greta Grimmer WMS. She had a keen interest in local history and was a long time subscriber to the Mount Allison Performing Arts series.
Queenie is survived by sons Donald (Barbara), Halifax, Brian (Joanne), Dartmouth; grandchildren Suzanne (Craig) Thornton, Peter Stonehouse (Danielle LeBlanc), Julianna Stonehouse (Nicholas Faulkner) , Erin Stonehouse (Colin Oldreive); great grandchildren Owen and Luke Faulkner; sisters Marjorie Skinner, Amherst and Dorothy Steeves, Saint John, NB; and brother James (Mary) Rutherford, Bible Hill, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents Queenie was predeceased by her husband Lloyd E. Stonehouse in 1999.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St in Amherst (902-667-8777) on Wednesday, March 21st from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Funeral Service will be held in Amherst on Thursday, March 22nd at 2:00 pm from First Baptist Church with Rev. Byron Corkum officiating. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Amherst or to a charity of choice. Interment will be at a later date in the Amherst Cemetery.
Queenie’s family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the staff and residents at Maplestone Enhanced Care, Halifax for their love, care, support and friendship generously given to her during her stay. Thank you as well to the physicians and staff at the Halifax Infirmary, QE11 for the superb care given to our mother and the support given to her family at this difficult time.
