M. Agnes Rafferty
RAFFERTY, M. AGNES - M. Agnes Rafferty, 80, of Lakeview Manor, Riverview and formerly of Ayer Ave., Moncton, passed away peacefully at her residence on Sunday March 25, 2012. Born in Newcastle, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (O’Brien) Whalen. Agnes attended St. Mary’s Academy, Newcastle and graduated from the Hotel Dieu Hospital School of Nursing, Moncton (1954). She was very involved at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church as Pastoral Minister, catechism teacher, was an active member of the CWL and assisted at funeral receptions for years. Agnes was Past Chairman of St. Pat’s Family Centre, Past President of St. Pat’s Ladies Auxilliary and was a very active volunteer member. She was a member of Fairlane’s Ladies Belles Tuesday Morning bowling league for 35 years, an avid bridge player, loved to read and knit and enjoyed spending summers at the cottage at Parlee Beach with her grandchildren. She also volunteered with Girl Guides of Canada as a tester and unit helper and was a member of the Irish Canadian Cultural Association. Agnes is survived by her husband of over 55 years, Richard “Dick” Rafferty; three daughters, Colleen Rafferty, Nancy Squires (Mike), Kerry Firth (Dwayne) and son, Richard Rafferty (Angela); grandchildren, Kathleen and Laura Squires, Keira and Liam Rafferty, Molly Firth and step granddaughter, Emilie Squires. She is also survived by her brothers, Jim Whalen (Dee Dee) of Truro, NS and Terry Whalen (Hazel) of Newcastle; brothers-in-law, Jack Rafferty (Pauline) of Dartmouth, Peter Rafferty (late Kaye) of Riverview, Phillip Rafferty (Kaye) of Moncton and by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, John and Joseph Whalen.
Visitation at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Funeral Mass at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church on Thursday March 29, 2012, at 3:00 pm. Reception in the Church Hall following the Mass. Interment, Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery later in the spring.
