John Randall (Randy) Roop

Roop John Randall “Randy” – Brookfield, passed away peacefully at home on Friday March 30, 2012 at the age of 65. Born in Truro, he was the devoted husband of Betty (Campbell) and loving father to Pam (Steve Olmstead), Bedford, Andrew (Becky Muise), Brookfield, Sherry (Jason Ovsenny), Toronto and Jack (Leah Densmore), Brookfield. Grandfather (“Bitty”) to Zach Olmstead, Alexa, Logan and Hope Roop, and Charlotte and Emily Ovsenny. Brother to Robert (Margaret). Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Jack and Vivian Roop, sister Jeal, and sister-in-law Twila Roop. Randy was owner operator of Roop’s Esso and Roop’s Cleaners. His sharp business acumen and his unrivaled work ethic helped expand these businesses through the addition of Nelson’s Cleaners (Truro), Sunshine Cleaners (New Glasgow) and the purchase of a Tim Horton’s franchise to accompany Roop’s Esso. Randy was very proud to be able to pass the businesses along to his sons prior to his passing. Randy was a proud Brookfield Elk playing Fastball and Hockey at the intermediate and senior levels. Not only a sporting participant, he was also past president of Brookfield Athletic Association. Recently (2010) Randy was the recipient of the Brookfield Men’s Club “Eagle Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community” for all of the time and effort that he and wife Betty have put forth in the support of their home town. Randy will be remembered most by those who knew him for his competitive spirit and his “larger than life” personality. Friends and relatives are invited to join the family for visitation on Monday April 2, 2012 from 2-4pm and 7-9 pm in Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro. The funeral service will follow at 2pm on Tuesday April 3, 2012 at Knox United Church in Brookfield with Rev. Larry Harrison officiating. A reception will immediately follow in the Knox United Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Brookfield Athletic Association, Brookfield Terry Fox Foundation, Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Disease – University of Toronto.
