Sister Margaret Beaton (Sister St. Agnes of Jesus) CND, passed peacefully into Eternal Life on April 9, 2012 at the CND Health Center, Sydney, N.S.
Born in Inverness, she was the daughter of the late Michael Beaton and Cassie (Beaton) Beaton.
Sister entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1939 and was professed in 1941. During her 70 years of religious life she served as teacher, administrator, archivist and accountant at Stella Maris Convent, Pictou; St. John’s Convent, New Glasgow; Holy Angels Convent, Sydney; Holy Name Convent, Truro; St. Peter’s Convent, Port Hood; Holy Family Convent, Inverness, St. Theresa’s Convent, Sydney; Notre Dame Convent, Baddeck; Rocky Mountain House, Alta., St. Martin’s Convent, New Victoria; Notre Dame Convent, Sydney Mines; Holy Redeemer Convent, Sydney. Countless numbers of students, parents and friends were influenced by her joyful visitation spirit, generosity and fidelity.
Sr. Margaret is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Rod MacEachern, Halifax; many nieces and nephews, also life long family friend, Sandy Crawford, Dartmouth. All were dear to her, especially Michael MacEachern, Halifax.
She was predeceased by one brother, Michael in infancy; sisters, Mary Mitchell, Louise Thomas, Josephine LeForest, Isabel MacEachern, Theresa MacDonald and Sr. Allana Beaton, CND.
It was Sister’s wish that her body be donated to science. There is no visitation. A liturgical celebration of Sr. Margaret’s life will take place at Holy Redeemer Church, Sydney, on Saturday, April 14 at 2 p.m. Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date.
