Betty Carroll, 84, formerly of Sydney, N.S., passed away peacefully Dec. 13, 2009, at Maplestone Enhanced Care, Halifax, N.S.
Betty was born Sept. 14, 1925, in D’Escousse, N.S., the youngest child of the late A.A. and Helen LeBrun.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Martin of Maplestone Enhanced Care, Halifax; children, Nancy (Joe Gillis), Josh and Kit (John Kelly); one grandchild, Jocelyn Elizabeth Gillis; one great-grandchild, Lauren Elizabeth Johnston; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by four children, Susan, James LeBrun, Martin Joseph (M.J.) and Jane Elizabeth, sisters, Helen LeVesconte and Zita Kyte, brothers, Gerald George, J.H. (Harold) and Arthur A. LeBrun.
Betty was a beloved mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed by all. She was loving, friendly, caring and giving. She was devoted to her family and friends. Betty was the ultimate organizer. Nothing gave her more pleasure than organizing events for her community or friends. To be there for her family and friends was paramount in her life. Many people will fondly remember the ceilidhs held at the Carrolls. Another pleasure in Betty’s life were the antique auctions she and Marty attended, searching for the treasures they found and displayed in their home and in their Days Gone By Emporium.
For many years she was the first executive director of the Cape Breton School of Crafts and pioneered it into becoming an important part of Cape Breton’s cultural heritage.
A celebration of Betty’s life will take place in Sydney, N.S., at a later date.
