Asa Williams
WILLIAMS
Asa Williams passed away January 7, 2012. Asa was born March 14, 1908 at Belle Plaine, SK. When he was four or five years old, Asa was the mascot for the Belle Plaine ball team and he kept the outfit his mother made him until his passing. The family moved to a homestead in the Crane Valley/Readlyn district in 1913, residing there until 1937 when they moved to Mitchellton, SK. During the depression years Asa rode the train looking for a job. On July 15, 1940 Asa enlisted in the Army in the Artillery division and served overseas on active duty in England until 1943 when he went to Italy for two years. From there he served time in France, Belgium and Holland, and on the border of Germany until 1945. He was discharged on October 28, 1945, returning home and working in Davidson, SK at a filling station until 1946. Asa then moved to Moose Jaw where he worked at the Nash Garage until moving to Oxbow where he worked in a GM garage. In 1951 he moved to Assiniboia where he worked at the Ford garage. Asa married Olive Swenson in 1954 and they moved to Moose Jaw and built their home on Francis Street in 1956. He worked for a Volkswagon dealership for about five years until obtaining employment with the City of Moose Jaw, taking care of skating rinks, and in the Parks Department, which including caring for Rosedale Cemetery. Predeceased by his parents Herb and Ellen Williams, his wife Olive, brother Tom (Margaret); sisters Jenny (Jack) Priestley, and Mary (Ralph) Traill. Asa is survived by one sister Okie Leaver, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. A Graveside Service will be held at Rosedale Cemetery on Saturday April 14, 2012 at 2:00 pm. Padre Doug Shepherd will officiate. Royal Canadian Legion Rites will be conducted by Chuck MacMillan. Those wishing to attend may meet at the Cemetery gates at 1:45 pm. A Memorial Tea will follow at Jones Family Centre 262 Athabasca St.E. at 2:30 pm. Memorials to Extendicare Family Support Group, 1151 Coteau St. W., Moose Jaw, S6H 5G5, would be appreciated.
