Philip Murray Theriault

Passed in: Cuba
Passed on: April 14th, 2012

PHILIP MURRAY THERIAULT - It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden death in Cuba on April 14th of Philip Murray Theriault, 59, of Halifax and formerly of Brighton, Digby County. Philip passed away doing something about which he was passionate: teaching English to Cuban university students with Compay Education Tours, a company Philip founded. He loved Cuba and its people. Philip loved to teach. After graduation from Acadia University, and eventually earning his Masters of Education degree, he spent his formal career years in schools from Freeport on Long Island to New Ross and Chester, specializing in English, French, and science. Even after retiring from the profession, he joined Mad Science Inc., spending noon hours in many schools offering mesmerizing magical science shows to elementary students. Philip was a gifted musician, teaching himself guitar from the age of eleven, and studying keyboard; he often performed in public and composed many songs. Another of Philip's passions was the Halifax International Jazz Festival, which he served many years as a tireless volunteer. Philip is survived by his wife, Camilla Meisner, Halifax; his mother, Pearl Theriault, Villa St. Joseph du Lac, Yarmouth; his son, Christopher, daughter-in-law, Kristen, and granddaughter, Sephrena, Toronto; sisters Sandra, Yarmouth; Helen, Caledonia; and Jean, Halifax; and brothers David, Yarmouth, and Hal, Digby. He was predeceased by his father, Joe Theriault, Brighton and Digby; and brother-in-law, Bill Griffiths, Dartmouth. Philip was well loved by his family and his many friends and colleagues, both here and in Cuba. He will be remembered for his kindness and generosity. He was a loving, thoughtful person. There will be a memorial service at a later date. If you wish to remember Philip with a donation, please give to a charity of your choice.
