Leona Lowther
Leona P. Lowther, 90 years of age, of Nappan passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at the High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill surrounded by her family. Born in Athol she was a daughter of the late Steward & Janie (Cotton) Dow.
While Leona's husband was overseas during WWII she helped her son move from Maccan to Nappan to look after the Logan family who's mother was very sick. They loved Nappan so much she had their small home moved to Nappan and was able to have everything ready when Lauren returned from the war, Leona became very involved with the Nappan United Church, teaching Sunday School and served as Superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. In her twenty's she took piano lessons so she could play for the children. She also had Explorer and CGIT groups. Leona was a big part of the UCW, serving as President for several years. She was an elder and on the Manse Committee. She was the organist for the Junior Choir and Senior Choir for 35 years .
In her early years Leona took in boarders, who all loved her cooking. She did work out of the home with Platex as a seamstress for 10 years. Leona loved to sew, knit & crocheting and also had a love for music. She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her, especially the staff at High Crest Nursing Home.
She is survived by her son, Osborne "Sonny" ( Vivian) of Maccan, NS; daughter, Linda Canning (Fred) of Southampton, NS; four grandchildren, Karen Hamilton (Larry) of Onslow, NS, Jo-Ann Potter (Rod) of Springhill, NS, Steven Spicer (Krista) of WindhamHill, NS, Janette Melanson (Shane) of Springhill, NS; ten great grandchildren & three great great grandchildren; sisters, Viola Gilbert of Athol, Beulah Brown (Earl) and Laura Brown (Donald) both of Joggins, NS; brothers, Leslie (Florence) of Maccan, NS, Frank (Kay) of Amherst, NS, Carmen (Barb) of Oshawa, ON, David (Rachelle) of Amherst, NS; Aunt Ruth Brown of Brampton, ON; many nieces and nephews and also long time friend Rev. Lewis Crewe of Newfoundland.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Lauren Lowther; sisters, Bessie Dow, Ella McIver; brother Bill; brother in laws Clair McIver, Vaughn Gilbert.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St. Amherst, NS(667-8777) No visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at the Furlong-Jones Funeral Home on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 10 a.m. Burial to take place in the Maccan Cemetery.
