It is with sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Mary Jane Bennett, 97, of Glace Bay passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late William and Annie (Russell) Penney. Mary was a member of St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Left to mourn her passing are sons, Gerry (Alice), Mike (Marcella), Garfield, Leo and Allan, all of Glace Bay, and Billie of Toronto; daughters, Thelma King, Ann (Charlie) Long, Sydney, Gloria Bennett, Glace Bay; daughter-in-law, Sharon Bennett, Glace Bay. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren whom Mary cherished.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Benjamin, son, Benny, sisters, Georgina Parsons, Leah Parsons, Elsie Jones, brothers, Leander Penney, Headley Penney and son-in-law, Neville King.
Visitation for Mary Bennett will be held Monday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Interment will be in St. Anthony Cemetery next to her husband, Benjamin.
