It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Walter J. Samson on Thursday, May 17. 2012, at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home.
Born in Little Anse, he was the son of Walter D. and Eva (Marchand) Samson. Comrade Walter J. Samson joined the Royal Canadian Legion Isle Madame Branch 150 in 1956 and in 1988 he received his Life Membership Award. His military stay was in the Service Unit RCA as a gunner - Canada Regular Forces.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, James (Roseanna) Benoit, Adelard Samson and Daniel (Kathleen) Samson.
Walter worked for over 30 years at Booth’s Fisheries/Richmond Fisheries until his retirement. He loved to cook, talk on the phone and garden, always willing to give away his prize cucumbers and tomatoes. His family will remember his never ending stories.
Walter is survived by his brother, Eric (Amelia) Samson, West Arichat and his only sister, Catherine Clannon, Little Anse, who was his primary care giver for the past several years. He is also survived by his nephew/godson, who was like a son to him, Milton (Ann Marie) Clannon, Little Anse and his children, Shelly Kehoe, Sydney, Timmy Clannon, Arichat, and Sandy (Nicole) Clannon, Sydney. Walter is also survived by two goddaughters, Paulette (Albert) Phalen, Sydney, and Claudette (Armand) Boudreau, St. Catharines, Ont., as well as many nephews and nieces.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, May 20 from 5-9 p.m. at IML Funeral Home, Petit De Grat. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 21 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Petit De Grat. Burial to follow in the Star of the Sea Cemetery, Petit De Grat.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Isle Madame Veteran’s Comfort Fund.
