Bernard William ‘Bernie’ Sylliboy, 65, We’Koqma’q First Nation passed away at home on Tuesday, May 15, 2012.
Born Aug. 20, 1946, in Baddeck, Victoria County, he was a son of the late William Noel and Janet Christine (Bernard) Sylliboy. Bernie was a member of Blessed Kateri Parish Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Waycobah. He was a carpenter for over 40 years; he was a Master of Woodworking, he enjoyed making woodworking projects. He worked on the construction of the Waycobah Federal School in 1979. Bernie was also a medical taxi driver; he loved listening to Scottish fiddle music. He was a member of the We`Koqma`q Elders Council. He was the bell Toller for 40 years. A friend to all who knew him, he was always known as Papa or Uncle Bernie. His favourite saying, asking if you were a Montreal Canadiens fan?
Bernie is survived by his children, Delores Sylliboy (Richard Joe), Bernie Sylliboy (Karlena), Georgina Julian (Merle) and Rachael Phillips all of We`Koqma`q; his partner, Barbara Isadore, siblings, Mildred Harvey, Burnt Church, N.B.; Marie (Grand Chief Ben) Sylliboy, Dorothy Googoo, Sarah (Cecil Condo) Sylliboy, Lawrence Sylliboy, John Sylliboy (Sadie), Michael Sylliboy, all of We`Koqma`q; Connie Metallica (Lindsay), Burnt Church, N.B.; grandchildren, Lauren, Jessie, Chantel, Andromeda, Richard, Noel; great-grandson, Kayson; Uncle Ben N. Sylliboy; Aunt Catherine Bernard, both of Eskasoni; numerous nieces and nephews; godchildren, Dita, Bart, Kenneth, Doreen, Theodore; brothers for life, Roderick Googoo and Martin Jacob Bernard.
Bernie is predeceased by his wife, Mary Ellen (Isadore); son, Trevor Michael; sister, Alexanderine, Linda Mae Paul, Christina; brothers, Noel and James.
Visitation will be after 7 p.m. today (Saturday, May 19,) in the family residence, 9087 Hwy. 105, Waycobah First Nation. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 21 from Blessed Kateri Parish Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Waycobah, with Fr. Robert McNeil officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Funeral arrangements for Bernie are under the care and direction of the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh.
