It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Peter Murphy, 91, Iona, on Friday, May 25, 2012, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck.
Peter was born in MacKinnon Harbour to Joe and Margaret (MacNeil) Murphy. During the Second World War, he served overseas with the Cape Breton Highlanders. After the war, he joined the N.S. Department of Highways, working for 32 years on the Grand Narrows Ferry, retiring with the position of engineer.
He was a founding member of Grandona Branch, Royal Canadian Legion, and of the Iona Volunteer Fire Department.
Peter was predeceased by his wife, Margaret ‘Nubbie’ (MacNeil) and his daughter, Donna, and by his brothers Hugh, Donald, Roddie and Michael.
He is survived by his sister, Margaret, MacKinnon Harbour; his daughter, Trudy, Antigonish; his sons, Roddie (Dolores), Iona, Gerard (Brenda), Grand Narrows and David, Ottawa; his grandson, Ryan, Iona; and his granddaughters, Kimberly, Fredericton and Colleen, Iona.
The family would like to thank the staff of Renal Dialysis Unit, Cape Breton Regional Health Authority for all their support and friendship over the past two and a half years, as well as the staff of the Victoria County Memorial Hospital for all they did for Peter and the family in his final days.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 27, 2-9 p.m. at the St. Columba Parish Centre with the funeral following on Monday, May 28, 11 a.m. at St. Columba Church. Fr. Ajit Kerketta officiating.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Renal Dialysis Unit, Cape Breton Regional Health Authority, or the charity of your choice.
