Dennis Robert Calder, 67, of Springhill, passed away at the Halifax Infirmary on Saturday, December 19, 2009.
Born in Springhill on April 2, 1942, he was the eldest son of the Late Robert G. and Cecilia (Mackey) Calder.
Dennis was educated in the Springhill school system; he served with the Royal Canadian Navy for 5 years and then with Corrections Canada as an Engineer and Correctional Officer until his retirement. While there he was the president of the local Union of the PSAC. He was a member of the Springhill Town Council, president of the Springhill Legion and a member of the Provincial NDP party. He was committed to the AA movement, a dedicated member and counselor for many years. He recently received his 20-year medallion. He was a good friend to all with whom he came in contact.
He is survived by daughters, Nadia Calder of Oxford and Dana (Calder) Deveaux, Truro; grandchildren, Zackary and Tylia; brothers, John (Jo-Ann), Springhill, Ronald (Patrick), St. Margaret's Bay, NS; sisters, Janet (Robert) Arseneau, Springhill and Pamela (Michael) Wark, Cold Brook, N. S; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his companion, Barbara Beaton.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361). Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 until 3 pm, followed immediately by a Committal Service. His ashes will be interred in the North Street Roman Catholic Cemetery, Springhill in the spring.
If so desired donations in memory of Dennis may be made to the Parkinson Society of Nova Scotia.
