Passed on: June 13th, 2012
With heartfelt regret, we announce the passing of our wife, mother, sister and friend, Asta King, on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at home.
She was born in Rochester, N.Y., on Nov. 16, 1963, and lived her childhood on Pond Street in Sydney Mines.
Asta was predeceased by her mother, Flora (Bardswich) Scott and her father, Joseph Sodys.
Asta touched the lives of many through her strengths, talents and infectious laughter. As an artisan, she was unmatched in her natural gift of painting, and pieces of her live on, in many houses, in the form of her artwork and memories. She also had a great love for the environment and nature, and played a fundamental role at both Nova Scotia Power and Marina Atlantic in these areas.
Lithuanian in heritage, Asta was an excellent baker and cook, and mastered all of the cultural dishes as well as the local Nova Scotian specialties.
She had great connections in Margaree, where the family had a summer residence, and acquired many great friends including Beverly and Brea Marks. This was also where she and Kevin frequently spent their spare time together, hunting and swimming.
Asta leaves behind her husband and true love, Kevin King and the lights of her life, daughter, Kaela (James Jabalee) and son, Justin (Andrew MacNeil). In addition, her siblings, Lina (Dave MacDonald), Matthew (Margaret Sodys) and Daina (Curtis MacDonald); niece, Logan MacDonald (Patrick Brennan) and nephews, Evan Vickers (Faith Jessome), Joseph and David Sodys. Family members, Valeria Sodys, Rochester, N.Y., Kay and Ernie Green, Sharon and Vince Bailey, the Bardswich family, extended family, friends and colleagues will also sadly miss her.
The family would like to deeply thank Dr. Michel McKeough and Louise, as well as Dr. John Jensen at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, and all the wonderful VON/Palliative Care staff for their care and commitment.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday, June 18, 2012, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Pierce Street, North Sydney, with Rev. Patrick O'Neill officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
By family request, donations in Asta's memory may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, or the charity of your choice.
