WIENS: Samuel (Sam) Henry Wiens, age 81 years of Swift Current, SK, passed away June 16, 2012 at the Cypress Regional Hospital. The funeral mass was held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, June 21, 2012. from Christ The Redeemer Catholic Church, with Father James Owolagba officiating. The pianist was Marlene Dolter and the organist was Missie Wiens. The readers were Marvin Wiens and Stacey Wiens. The ushers were Jason Keller and Brendan Ross. Pallbearers were Sam's grandchildren Melanie Ross, Kylee Wiens, Chris Martens, Cole Wiens, Daniel Martens and Tyson Wiens. Honorary Pallbearers were all who shared in his life. The interment service took place at Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK. Sam was born on June 22, 1930 in Chortitz, SK. He attended school in Wymark. He met his wife Florence Grant at a dance in Swift Current in 1948 and the couple were married on October 7, 1950 in Swift Current, SK. He began work for Gallant Motors in Swift Current right after they were married. Sam worked winters as a mechanic at various service stations and summers helping his dad farming. In 1954, they opened their own service station in Wymark called S+F Texaco. Sam also drove school bus for fifteen years. He began farming his own land, beginning with a quarter section purchase from his father-in-law and continued farming until 2011 when he retired. Mom and Dad began square dancing in 1961. Soon after Dad started calling for various square dance clubs, including The Crazy 8's Kid's Club, Waldeck Ookpiks and Westwind Singles. They made many lifelong friends through this pastime. They also arranged many bus tours and trips with fellow square dancers to such places as Florida, Nashville, New Orleans, the Maritimes and Hawaii. In 1973, Mom and Dad achieved their dream of building a new house on a piece of land they owned near McMahon. They loved the peace and quiet and lived there happily until 2011, when they sold and moved to Swift Current, due to Dad's declining health. Dad was well known by everyone for his meticulous mechanical work and his immaculate John Deere machinery and GM Trucks. Sam is survived by his wife Florence of Swift Current; his children, Murray (Laura) Wiens, Bonnie (Neil) Martens, Jody (Monique) Wiens, Patricia Wiens and Missie Wiens; grandchildren Melanie (Jay) Ross, Bob (Kayla) Wiens, Jason (Lindsay) Wiens, Chris (Amanda) Martens, Daniel (Robin) Martens, Kylee Cole and Tyson Wiens, and Astrid and Sam Wiens; four great grandchildren; brother, Marvin (Louise) Wiens; two sisters-in-law, Doris (Art) Johnson and Verdyne Grant and uncle Jake Wiens. He was predeceased by his parents Isaac and Tina Wiens; mother and father-in-law, Flora and John Grant; brothers-in-law, Dick Grant and Lloyd Grant and numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins. Sam will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by his family and friends. In his memory, memorial donation may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
