Passed peacefully away at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home on January 3, 2010, surrounded by his loving family, Arthur Downey, age 77 years. Predeceased by his parents, Nathan and Mary Downey (Winterton) and parents-in-law, Donald and Julia Andrews (Wesleyville). Leaving to mourn his devoted wife Shirley; daughters, Donna (Perry) Downey, Denise (Rod) Abbott and Deanne (Albert) Jacobs; cherished grandchildren, Jamie and Justin Downey, Jessica and Michael Abbott, and Aaron Jacobs. Also saddened by his passing are brother-in-law Cyril (Statie) Andrews and family (Labrador City), as well as several cousins and close family friends. Art was a longtime member of the Loyal Orange Lodge and Royal Black Perceptory, in Winterton and New Perlican. He retired in 1988 after spending an extensive career in the education field. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s. Visitation on Tuesday, January 5th from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service on Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 from St. James United Church at 2 p.m. Interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Autism Society of N.L.
