It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Alonzo Patrick MacNeil Sr., on Saturday, June 30, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Jenny (MacNeil) MacNeil.
Following the death of his mother when he was six months old, Alonzo was loved and cared for by his maternal grandparents, the late John Y. and Elizabeth MacNeil.
Alonzo was employed with Devco, working in the Phalen and Prince Mines and 26 Colliery until his retirement in 1992. As an avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching hockey and cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs, but his real love was watching his grandchildren play hockey. He had a passion for music and took great pleasure in playing the guitar and dancing. A joker at heart, Alonzo kept family and friends entertained with many jokes and stories. He loved to read and watch movies, his favourite being Westerns.
He is survived by his wife, the former Juliana Corbett; daughters, Carolyn (James) McNeil, New Glasgow, Jenny (Ray) Connors, Tammy (Francis) McPhee, both of Edmonton, Nicole MacNeil (Darren McInnis), Dominion, Nadine (Jason) Jeffrey, Labrador City; son, Alonzo MacNeil Jr., Gardiner Mines; four brothers; two sisters; grandchildren, Natasha, Raya, Shardae, Leteasha, Evan, Nathan, Marissa, Hayden, Jordan, Donovan, Faith, Cruz; great-granddaughter Avalee; aunts, Nisha Mullins, Bernedette McGillivray, Josie Butts; several nieces and nephews; first cousin, who was like a brother Harold Roach ‘Queeko’.
Besides his parents and grandparents, Alonzo was predeceased by brothers, Frederick MacNeil, Gary MacNeil, grandson, Matthew MacNeil (McPhee).
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be offered Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Burial in St. James Cemetery, Gardiner Mines.
Memorial donations may be made in Alonzo’s name to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.
