It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of our cherished mother, grandmother, and sister, Sophie Gillis, at home surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, July 12, 2012.
Born in River Denys, Sophie was the daughter of the late Martin and Mary (Niedzielski) Ropek.
Sophie was a devoted mom who lived for her children and grandchildren, the love of her life. She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends, her door was always open and a place for everyone at her table. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo and visiting with her family. Sophie started baking at 12 years old and baked pies for Ropek’s Bakery for many years before retiring at 80.
She is survived by her daughters, Catherine (Fabe Sudworth), Sharon (Wayne McKenzie), Rose (Brian McPherson), all of New Waterford, Angela (Frank MacKinnon), New Victoria; sons, Wayne (Mary), New Waterford, Bobby (Susie), Ont.; 11 grandchildren, Michael, David, Colin, Carollee, Tony, Timmy, Scott, Adam, Cory, Meaghan and Matthew; 12 great-grandchildren, Kate, Ashley, Charles, Emma, Erica, Emily, Alex, Hunter, Jessica, Carson, Grace, Aidia, great-great-grandchild, Denver; brother, Danny (Donna), New Waterford; and many nieces and nephews.
Sophie was predeceased by her loving husband, Angus Gillis, grandchildren, Jillian, Robert, Andrea, sisters, Jenny Odo, Rosie MacPherson, Mary Mombourquette, Cecilia Dwyer, brothers, Teddy and Walter.
There will be a private family visitation at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Monday, July 16 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Victor Ozoufuanya officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in St. Agnes Cemetery at a later date. A luncheon will be held at St. Leonard’s Parish Hall, Convent Street, immediately following the funeral mass.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or a charity of one’s choice.
