Lawrence MacNeil
Born In: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed in: Canada
Passed on: July 12th, 2012
We regret to announce the death of our brother Lawrence MacNeil, 51 of Calgary on Thursday July 12, 2012 after a brief battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney he was the youngest son of the late Murdock and Kay MacNeil.
In his younger years, growing up in the Northend of Sydney, Lawrence enjoyed playing baseball in the “wire yard”, hockey on the rink behind Sacred Heart Church, or just hanging out with his friends in our kitchen playing a game of cards or darts. At the young age of 17 he decided to leave home and head to Alberta where work was always, it seemed, plentiful and easily acquired. While in Calgary he worked in various jobs from carpentry to scaffolding. Along the way, he befriended many who have shared with us how Lawrence always opened his door and welcomed them to stay as they looked for work and a permanent place of their own to call home. This kindness was a trait he learned from our parents, yet truly is “the Caper Way” to lend a helping hand to those who need it. He is survived by sisters Jane and Theresa Ann; brothers Joey, Leonard (Theresa) and their children Rodd (Angie), David (Cavelle), Stephen (Megan), Michelle (Tyler) and Jennifer.
Predeceased by his sister Elizabeth; brothers Angus (in infancy) and Rod.
The family would like to extend a huge thank you to all of Lawrence’s friends in Calgary who helped him through his illness. In particular Neil and Suzanne White for their constant support, kindness, and care they showered upon Lawrence over the past few months as he battled his illness. You never left his side for a moment, and we truly cannot thank you enough for being such great friends.
In lieu of flowers, those who may wish to provide a donation in our brother’s memory, please do so by providing a donation to the local food bank in your immediate area, or to Loaves and Fishes here in Sydney, NS.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday July 18, 2012 at Sacred Heart Church, 217 George St., Sydney with Fr. Anthony O’Connor officiating.
“And just at that moment when someone at my side says, "There! He's gone!" there are other eyes watching him coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "Here he comes!"
