SHAVER: The passing of Edson Shaver occurred suddenly on Saturday evening, July 14, 2012 at his home at the Pioneer Manor in Swift Current. He was born May 3, 1919 at the Shaver home in the Webb district. He attended the Gander Lake School and completed his high school in Webb. He honored his father’s wishes and made farming his career. They had a mixed farming operation, but he enjoyed the cattle most. He had an amazing way with animals particularly his special horse Flicka and his collie dogs. He married Margaret (MacDonald) on December 29, 1943 in Medicine Hat AB. Together they raised four children. Always a man of conviction and reliability, Edson took on his share of responsibility in the community. He was a quiet man who never sought reward or recognition, but everyone who knew him, knew they could rely on him – he was a man of his word. He really enjoyed his many years of curling both in Webb and Swift Current, a sport he excelled at. An abandoned 1924 Studebaker became his passion. He had fond memories driving this car as a young boy. So after almost fifty years in a junk pile being destroyed by weather and the cattle, he pulled it out just to see if he could get the motor running! One thing led to another and gradually he completely restored this vehicle himself to make sure it was exactly as the original. He joined the Studebaker Antique and Driving Clubs and every summer he would take part in the International Studebaker Meets, traveling all over the continent, proudly showing his car. He received several awards at these shows and was thrilled to receive an Honorary Life Membership from the Studebaker Club. Often as one would drive down the No. 1 Highway past his farm he could be seen scooting around the yard in his car and later when they moved into Swift Current in 1991, he enjoyed taking Margaret for little tours in his ’24! Edson is survived by his two daughters, Renee (Dennis) Anderson and Elizabeth (Terry) Elder and his son Sam (Cheryle) Shaver, his sister Beatrice Taylor, nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Margaret, parents Sam and Irene Shaver, daughter Ann Phippen, sister Gertrude Snoddy, son-in-law Ron Phippen and infant grandchildren Myrna and Trevor Anderson. Edson was laid to rest July 23, 2012 at a family service in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current SK with Pastorial Assistant Barb Wiebe officiating. The pallbearers were grandsons Derek Shaver, Darryl Anderson Travis Hemsworth and Taylor Shaver and granddaughters Samantha Lowe and Marcia Harris. Following the interment service friends and family were invited to a reception presented by the ladies of the First United Church U.C.W. In lieu of other tributes, donations in Edson’s memory may be directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Warren’s Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
