Mrs. Marcella (Curtis) Buchan

Passed peacefully away at Carbonear General Hospital on Sunday, July 29, 2012, Mrs. Marcella (nee Curtis) Buchan of Clarke’s Beach, NL. Predeceased by her husband Albert Victor Buchan, parents George and Sarah Jane (nee Dawe) Curtis, sister Louise Smith, brother-in-law Peter Rothman and a beloved nephew, Terry Smith. Marcella leaves to mourn sisters: Elizabeth (Stanley) Bessey, Port aux Basques, Jessie Rothman, Arnolds Cove, Bertha (John) Hunt, St. John’s; brothers: George Albert Curtis (Louise), Gander, Rev. Franklin D. Curtis (Vera), Fredericton, New Brunswick; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. By profession, Marcella was a radiological technician and was among the first to receive that designation. Marcella worked in various locations throughout the province including St. John’s, Gander and Carbonear. On a number of occasions, Marcella helped provide training for aspiring technologists. In 1957 she was chosen to serve as treasurer of the Newfoundland Branch of the Canadian Society of Radiological Technicians. Marcella’s late husband was also a radiological technician by profession and together for a number of years they served with the Grenfell Mission to help provide health care in northern Newfoundland and Labrador. They traveled the coast in the Grenfell Mission hospital ship “Strathcona” and later “The Christmas Seal”. Marcella lived a full and productive life and her last years were definitely enriched through her wonderful friendships in the Clarke’s Beach United Church. Marcella is resting at Moore’s Funeral Home, Clarke’s Beach with visitation on Monday 2 – 5 p.m., 7 – 9 p.m. and Tuesday 10 – 12 Noon. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from Clarke’s Beach United Church and Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marcella’s memory may be made to the Clarke’s Beach United Church.
