Shirley J. Beal, 78 of Dartmouth passed away Aug. 5, 2012 in Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in Inverness, Shirley was the only child of the late John W. and Elsie (Glabais) Roche. Shirley enjoyed a long and distinguished teaching career, which began at Mira Road School and continued until her retirement from Prince Arthur Jr. High School in Dartmouth. A life longer learner, Shirley obtained her Master of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University. In her retirement she attended the Atlantic School of Theology and received a Diploma in Theological Studies. Shirley was a well-known soprano soloist. She was a devoted member of Woodlawn United Church, having served on many committees through the years. For over 20 years she was the piano accompanist for Woodlawn United Church Chancel and Gospel choirs, as well as accompanying for soloists and ensembles.
She is survived by cousins, Nigel Glabay, Neil Glabay (Debbie), Anne Bowman and Alex Glabais.
Special thanks to the nurses and doctors of the Dartmouth General Hospital, 4th floor transitional unit for their care and kindness shown to Shirley and her friends during her illness.
Cremation has taken place. Visiting will be Thursday, Aug. 9 from 7-9 p.m., in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, Portland Street, Dartmouth. Memorial service will be celebrated 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10 in Woodlawn United Church, Sue King- Darby officiating. Burial at a later date in Inverness.
No flowers by request, donations in Shirley's memory can be made to Woodlawn United Church Accessibility Fund or Bide Awhile.
